A dog kennel can fit the garden and still be the wrong size for the dog. Treat the outside dimensions, doorway and usable interior as three separate checks. Labels such as Large or X-Large are useful for comparing versions of one model, but are not a universal sizing system.
1. Record your dog’s measurements
Write down standing height and body length, then compare them with the supplier’s internal measurements and entrance dimensions. Think about entering, turning and settling inside. This is a comparison checklist, not a breed-based size guarantee; a breed name alone is not enough to select a kennel.
2. Separate the house from the porch
A front verandah adds to the external footprint. It does not necessarily add to the enclosed sleeping area. In porch-style layouts such as Porchside, ask which measurements describe the full structure and which describe the sheltered interior before making a decision.
The same distinction applies to roof overhangs. An overall width measured across the roof may be larger than the usable floor width. Never calculate internal room simply by subtracting an assumed wall thickness from the outside measurement.
3. Check the entrance
Confirm the opening width and height for the selected size. A photograph can show the shape of a doorway, but perspective makes it unsuitable for measuring it. If these dimensions are absent, ask for them rather than choosing from the outside dimensions alone.
4. Plan placement and access
Mark the full external footprint where the kennel will stand. Check access for assembly and cleaning, and review the product’s placement, outdoor-use and maintenance guidance. A double-door design does not by itself establish suitability for two dogs; internal layout and each animal’s needs still matter.
