Choosing a cat enclosure: vertical, horizontal or joined?

The tallest cat enclosure is not automatically the roomiest, and the widest photograph may show more than one unit. Before choosing a catio, compare the usable floor space, the arrangement of levels, access and the package you will actually receive.

Start with where it will stand

Measure the clear length and width of your patio or garden position. Note overhead restrictions, nearby doors and the route you will use to assemble and maintain the enclosure. Compare the overall dimensions in both orientations, but only rotate the layout if its doors and access still work in that position.

Our space checker compares the outside rectangle. It does not confirm internal room, mesh suitability, stability, weather protection or whether a door can open. A positive fit result is a first filter, not a complete suitability check.

Vertical and horizontal answer different questions

An upright layout uses height to arrange levels. A horizontal layout spreads the structure across more ground. Compare the usable floor dimensions and movement between levels, rather than adding up external height and assuming it creates more usable space. Ask for internal measurements where they are not listed.

The Vista listings separate vertical and horizontal arrangements. Use the dimensions for the arrangement you are viewing; do not borrow measurements from the other photograph. Product imagery is illustrative where marked, so it should not be used to estimate mesh openings or unseen fittings.

Single and Duo: count the modules

Loft Single and Loft Duo are presented separately so the package difference is clear. Check how many modules are included, whether connecting parts are supplied and what the joined dimensions are. Buying two single units is not automatically equivalent to a verified joined package.

Freestanding does not mean connected to your house

A freestanding cat enclosure and a cat run connected to a door or window need different access plans. Do not assume that a tunnel, wall fixing or window adapter is included unless the listing says so. List any extra connection you need before comparing prices.

Keep a short comparison note

  • Selected arrangement and module count
  • External length, width and height
  • Usable internal measurements and access openings
  • Included platforms, doors and connection parts
  • Any details still needing confirmation
